PATCHWORK HEART

By: Stephanie Ellison

There are moments in life that feel so much bigger than you ever imagined. This week was one of them.

I had the incredible honor of sharing my Patch-Worked story with Child Protective Investigations professionals from across the entire state of Texas. Standing in front of the very people who step into the hardest moments of children’s lives every day was one of the greatest privileges of my life.

As someone whose own story includes foster care, homelessness, abuse, and the intervention of people who refused to look away, I couldn’t help but think about the countless hands behind the seams of my own life. Teachers. Caseworkers. Mentors. Foster parents. Advocates. Friends. People who chose to show up when they didn’t have to.

This week, I had the opportunity to thank many of those kinds of people.

I hope they left knowing that while they may never see the finished tapestry, every act of compassion becomes another stitch in someone’s story. They may not realize it in the moment, but they are helping piece together lives that one day may become meaningful.

There is still so much I want to tell you about this week, and honestly, I haven’t even had time to process it all yet.

But I have to share one unexpected moment that felt like another patch sewn into this journey.

Right before I spoke, Danny made a last-minute decision to call a local recording studio where we were speaking. I had finished writing a new song for this conference the day before and decided to try and sing it live. I also wanted to record a simple version beforehand…just in case I couldn’t make it through without crying🫣😭💕. We weren’t chasing perfection. We just wanted to preserve the moment.

When we walked into the studio, we recorded just to have it. While sitting with the engineer and listening, I looked up and saw a Grammy sitting on the shelf. As we talked with him, he was so humble. Then as we were looking at this beautiful recording console that had come from one of Nashville’s premier studios in the 1990s. The first artist he mentioned recording on it was Dolly Parton. Then came Reba McEntire, Randy Travis, and so many voices that carried me through pieces of my childhood.

I just stood there thinking… How is this real?

I cried so many tears after leaving. It felt like another one of those quiet reminders that life has a way of weaving together moments you could never plan.

Then Danny had uploaded the recording online to share. 🥹 We weren’t planning to advertise it. We simply wanted to preserve what God was doing in this season.

As I look back on this week, I realize this has become about so much more than a patchwork dress. It’s about a life that once felt torn apart becoming a testimony that restoration is possible.

It’s about ordinary people choosing to become the hands behind the seams.

It’s about believing that every patch, even the painful and frayed ones, can become part of something remarkably beautiful.

To everyone at DFPS who allowed me the honor of sharing my story with you…thank you. I will never forget this week. I hope you know the work you do matters more than you may ever realize. Somewhere, years from now, someone will stand on another stage because you chose to show up when they needed someone most. We all know how imperfect the system is but my heart is to share gratitude for the parts that get it right and practice restoration through healthy relationships and love!

We are all helping stitch together stories we’ll never fully see this side of heaven. ❤️
